Located in the heart of Tokyo, Kameido Tenjin Shrine has been nicknamed "Shita-machi no Tenjin-sama," meaning the "Downtown Tenjin Shrine of Tokyo." Sugawara no Michizane is enshrined here, and the shrine is good luck in scholarship and studies. This shrine is famous for it's beautifully manicured wisteria trellises and 200 plum trees. The wisteria on the trellises bloom late April- early May and have been inspiration for many an ukiyo-e wood block print, especially in the Edo Period. During the wisteria season, the shrine holds the "Fuji-Festival," (wisteria festival). The Kameido Tenjin Shrine also features a gorgeous red arched drum-bridge over a pond filled with turtles and water fowl. If you visit during the wisteria season, make sure to check out the trellises and catch a glimpse of the reflection of the purple flowers on the pond.
